Job description

Shanghai Huaer Collegiate School Kunshan is seeking to appoint Teaching Fellows across all subjects and age groups for the current school year.

The Huaer Collegiate Teaching Fellows program brings together a cohort of talented and passionate recent college graduates to engage in practical fieldwork and seminar-based professional development, in order to qualify as a lead teacher after the completion of one school year. There are five basic components of the Teaching Fellow’s duties and responsibilities:

1. Course/Class Sections: A Teaching Fellow typically assists with teaching across a range of courses, under the supervision and coaching of one or more Faculty Mentors who are responsible for course design and delivery. Based on the Fellow’s progress, this includes an increasing amount of lesson planning and delivery, student assessment and evaluation, parent communication, and other course administration duties such as preparation of course materials and consultation and meetings with other colleagues. Classroom teaching activities will initially account for about 20 hours per week on average.

2. Conference: Teaching Fellows enhance the classroom experience by offering individual and small group guidance to students, as well as feedback to faculty. Teaching Fellows are being trained to facilitate learning by directing conversation, posing challenging questions, suggesting effective study strategies, and providing feedback and directions to additional resources. Teaching Fellows will maintain accurate attendance and summary reports of student progress during conference sessions and will often work closely with faculty members to coordinate student preparation for specific assignments. The number of conference hours required per week will be determined by the Director of Studies but is usually at least three hours per week.

3. Study Hall and Flexible Study: Teaching Fellows proctor campus study spaces used for Study Hall and Flexible Study. Students benefit when they learn with and from other students: questioning and listening improve communication ability and help clarify knowledge, while discussion increases critical thinking skills. As a Study Hall proctor, Fellows vigilantly take attendance and observe students to ensure and cultivate proper independent study and provide permission passes to meet in conference with teachers when appropriate. As a Flexible Study proctor, Fellows account for students, foster student understanding of subject-specific discourse and inquiry, model out-of-class engagement, and help direct learning in individual and small group conferences. The number of Study Hall and Flexible Study proctor hours required per week will be determined by the Dean of Student Life but is usually at least three hours per week.

4. Student Life and Advisory: Teaching Fellows support the Student Life program as an Advisor to scholars who are part of a class the Fellow supports. Fellows support scholars as they learn to be independent, manage their time well, study effectively during evening study hall, and respect themselves, this close interaction between scholars and the Teaching Fellows outside the classroom enables them to be more aware of each scholar's academic and personal goals, strengths, and weaknesses. By fostering these positive relationships with scholars, a Teaching Fellow also serves as a means of support when scholars need advice on personal or academic matters, and therefore, will serve as the formal Advisor to their scholars with an emphasis on both student and parent communication.

In addition to being a consistent presence in the classroom and study spaces, Teaching Fellows may also have opportunities to coach or sponsor other co-curricular after-school programs according to their interests and abilities and with the approval of the Director of Academics.

5. Cohort Study Table: Teaching Fellows are expected to share their knowledge and experience and contribute to our holistic educational community. Therefore, Fellows participate in a Cohort Study Table coordinated by the Director of Academics. During these meetings, Fellows benefit from learning with each other in facilitated seminars and from each other’s experiences through reflective practice discussions. Additionally, Fellows work collegially with faculty, attending faculty meetings and training, and taking an active interest in the activities of the various departments in which they serve by attending department meetings.
